History of Basketball

History of Basketball

1.Who invented basketball? Basketball was invented by the Canadian James Naismith.

2. Where? It was invented in Springfield, Massachusetts.

3. When? In 1891.

4. How? James Naismith divided his class of 18 to two teams of 9.

5. Why? It was invented because James Naismith wanted to condition young athletes during the winter. 

6. What were the circumstances in the beginning? The sport consisted of peach baskets and a soccer style ball. 
Original Rules: 
  1. The ball can be thrown in any direction with one or both hands.
  2. A player cannot run with the ball. 
  3. The time shall be 15 minutes halves with 5 minutes rest. 
  4. Etc.

7. What was it like at the start? The first game was on March 11, 1892. Naismith published new rules using 5 base ideas and 13 rules. 

8. What types of shots were done? Jump shot, free throws, layup, dunk, post shots, etc.

9. How is basketball different today than when it started? Basketball is different now because originally the game was played with peach baskets and now the basket height is at 10 feet. There is now backboards which weren't originally used. The ball also changed.
